Finance and Budget

The OCDSB has an annual operating budget of approximately $864M.  Our budget year is aligned with the school year and runs from September 1st to August 31st.  Our budget process helps to ensure the allocation of resources in support of our strategic plan, annual district goals and school improvement planning.

School boards are funded by the Province of Ontario. The Ministry allocates funding to each board using a formula formula that’s based on student enrolment and the unique needs of the students in each board. The Province sets the education tax rate, not the school board trustees.

Budget planning begins early in the year.  In the spring, the Province announces the Grants for Student Needs (GSNs) - that is when school districts learn the details about available funding for the next year.  With that information, staff presents a draft budget to the Board of Trustees.  The Board deliberates over the budget for several weeks, seeks public input and makes a final decision - usually in June.

In every budget, students are always our primary focus and we are committed to making efficient, effective, and innovative use of resources to offer a range of
programs and services which meet the needs of all of our students.
