OCDSB Podcast: Episode 2, “It’s Ok” 

Episode 2 of our podcast, In Conversation with OCDSB, is now available on SpotifyAnchor, and YouTube. We spoke with Emily Balla, the OCDSB’s mental health lead, about mental health, wellness, and how parents can support children (and themselves) to better deal with the challenges that come our way. 

Summer School Registration for Grades 6-8 Now Open 

Registration for 2022 Summer School Programs for students in Grades 6-8 is now open! Two non credit programs are available for OCDSB students currently in Grades 6-8, as well as some Reach Ahead Credit courses for Grade 8 students entering Grade 9. Learn more on our website.

May 14th: MacSkimming Outdoor Education Centre “Open Trails” Event 

On Saturday May 14th, the MacSkimming Outdoor Education Centre is having its annual Open Trails event from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This is the only day where the centre is open to everyone to come and explore the OCDSB 425 acre classroom! May 17th: OCDSB Speaker Series: Recognizing and Responding to Stress and Anxiety, 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. 

Join Dr. Kristin Schaub, Supervisor of Psychological Services at the OCDSB, and Jeremy Doucette, a registered psychological associate with the College of Psychologists of Ontario, for a discussion on stress and anxiety in children. This session provides an opportunity for parents and caregivers to understand the differences between stress, fear, and anxiety, to learn practical strategies to help children with feelings of stress and worry, and to reflect on our own stress to be in the best position to support our children. Register here

May 18th - Rainbow Youth Forum - 6:00 p.m. - 8:45 p.m.! 

The students of the OCDSB 2021-2022 2SLGBTQ+ Voices: Pathways to Interdependence Program are proud to present the 17th annual Rainbow Youth Forum 2022 on Wednesday, May 18 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:45 p.m.! Come join us for a virtual evening filled with fantastic events, workshops and opportunities to connect with each other. This event will be held via Zoom and registration is open to all 2SLGBTQ+ OCDSB students, OCDSB staff, community organizations and parents/guardians supporting an attending student. Register Now! 

June 18th: The Ottawa Student Transportation Authority’s Driver Appreciation Day 

Saturday, June 18th is OSTA’s Virtual Driver Appreciation Day, where we recognize and thank our many dedicated drivers and walking school bus (WSB) leaders for getting students to and from school safely. This year, you can create a card to share your thanks online or on social media, so that your driver or leader gets the recognition they deserve! Students can post their card on Twitter or Facebook and tag OSTA, or can upload it online

Important Dates

May 8th is Mothers Day. May 10th is Bear Witness Day, which honours the memory of Jordan River Anderson and ensures the full implementation of Jordan’s Principle. Jordan’s Principle is a legal rule that ensures First Nations children receive the services and supports they need when they need them. Please reach out to members of the Indigenous Education and Learning Team for more learning resources. We will be sharing more important dates taking place in May in future updates. In case you missed it…

Google Hangouts for Students during Jewish Heritage Month: Jewish students in grades 7-12 are invited to join a weekly student-led Google Hangout, open to all students who are a part of a Jewish family, including those who are exploring their Jewish identities. Students must log in to Google Meet using their OCDSB account, and can ask their student success teacher, principal, or vice principal for the nickname. Meets will take place from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Monday May 9th, Monday, May 16th, Thursday, May 26th, and Monday, May 30th. 

School Board Trustee Nomination Period: The nomination period for school board trustee candidates is now open, for those who wish to run in the 2022 Municipal and School Board Elections on October 24, 2022. The nomination period to register as a candidate runs from Monday, May 2, 2022 until Friday, August 19, 2022 (at 2:00 p.m.). Learn more on our website and view nomination information from the City of Ottawa.
