Transformative and Innovative Solutions for Accessible, Equitable and Inclusive Education

On December 3rd, the OCDSB joins communities and organizations around the world, to stand for persons with disabilities to be recognized for their humanity and abilities.

Each day, we learn and work with, from and beside persons who learn and work differently. Some were born with a disability, while others' lives were changed because of an illness or accident. There are approximately 10-15% students and staff within the OCDSB community who identify as a person with a disability. We believe our numbers are higher. And, we know that many people do not share who they are because we still have much work to create a discrimination free environment.

At this time, we invite students, staff and families to reflect on what we can do differently to fulfill the OCDSB’s commitment to identity and apply Transformative and Innovative Solutions for Accessible, Equitable and Inclusive Education. This includes:

  • ensuring learning and workplace conditions and cultures that nurture the abilities of students and staff living with visible or invisible disabilities;
  • enhancing the use of relevant and responsive supports to increase access and opportunities for their well-being and success; and,
  • removing human-made barriers, such as our assumptions and systemic practices that deny students and staff with a disability the opportunity to create their best life with respect and dignity.
