Ontario government commits to new funding for Findlay Creek school

Today, the Ontario government announced that it will be committing over $19.2 million to fund the construction of a new OCDSB elementary school with child care in Ottawa’s Findlay Creek community.

This came as part of a broader announcement that the Ontario government is investing nearly $500 million to support 37 school projects, including 23 with child care projects, across the province as part of the 2022-2023 Capital Priorities Program. This funding will build and improve schools and create new licenced child care spaces throughout the province.

The new school will serve 674 students from Kindergarten to Grade 8. The site will also include a child care component with 39 spaces for toddler and preschool-aged children.

The OCDSB has purchased a 2.55 ha (6.3 acre) site located at 4501 Kelly Farm Drive, at the southeast intersection of Kelly Farm Drive and Miikana Road for this new school. The location is to the south of Vimy Ridge Public School. It will be the second public school to serve the community in one of the fastest growing areas in the city. The anticipated date of opening is still to be determined.

“With unpredictably explosive residential growth in parts of Ottawa, it is challenging to keep up with the need for new schools for the OCDSB. A second public school in the Findlay Creek community is urgently needed, and we are delighted that a new elementary school will now be funded,” said Trustee Lynn Scott, OCDSB Board Chair.

The OCDSB would like to thank the Ontario government for committing to this important project. In addition, we would like to acknowledge the parents, students, trustees and community members who have advocated for this school.

“Findlay Creek is a family-friendly community that has been growing exponentially over the last few years. There has been an urgent need for a second elementary school to serve the families of Findlay Creek. I would like to personally thank parent volunteers Kaveeta Ajwani, Ahmed Fawal and Intiaz Rahim who have tirelessly advocated in promoting the need for a second elementary school in the community and I share with them my delight that funding for a new elementary school has been announced,” said Jennifer Jennekens, OCDSB trustee for Zone 7 (Gloucester-South Nepean/Osgoode).
