Breaking Barriers: Achieving Black Student Excellence - November 23, 2019
On Saturday, November 23rd, 2019, educators and parents are invited to attend Breaking Barriers: Achieving Black Student Excellence, a conference on addressing anti-Black racism in schools.

This free, half-day event is for attendees to learn about specific issues affecting Black students and families in the education system. Workshops for parents will explore ways to navigate the school system and effectively advocate for their children. In a second workshop, parents will examine approaches to support the mental well-being of their children who experience anti-Black racism.

Workshops for educators will explore how racism in the education system adversely affects the rights of Black students and undermines their potential to succeed. Through an interactive workshop, participants will have the opportunity to explore issues around unconscious bias, discrimination and privilege. In a second workshop, participants will explore how to create and foster an inclusive curriculum based on equity, using culturally relevant teaching practices.

Coffee and light refreshments will be served, and free childcare will be offered from 8:20 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
