International Certificate Program (ICP) Testimonials

The OCDSB’s International Certificate Program (ICP) is an outstanding example of a thoughtful, educational approach to preparing youth as citizens and professionals in our increasingly multicultural and globalized realities.  The program design allows for students to engage in multiple ways and addresses the cognitive, affective, and behavioural aspects at the core of intercultural learning.

The Delegation of the European Union to Canada applauds the OCDSB's International Certificate Program for encouraging a new generation of globally-engaged Canadian youth. The emphasis placed on foreign language learning is particularly commendable, as multilingualism brings numerous personal and professional benefits. Students who pursue this Certificate are also ideally equipped to take advantage of similar European Union initiatives. These include the European Day of Languages and the Erasmus+ exchange program, which provides funding to Canadian students pursuing higher education and training in Europe.

The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada believes that a successful and thriving 21st century Canada will be one that has a broad knowledge and a sophisticated understanding of the countries and peoples of Asia, a very dynamic and rapidly rising region of the world. We have been extremely impressed by the International Certificate Program offered by the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB), especially its eagerness to engage its students in learning about important countries such as China, Japan and Korea. We hope this program will continue to serve as a model for others in Canada.

SOS Children’s Villages, is the largest child focused organization in the world and supports over 80,000 orphaned or abandoned children through its family based care. It is a great honour to collaborate with the International Certificate teachers and students from OCDSB on a project called Take Action 2015.  Based on the belief that young people are key allies and partners in global sustainable development, this youth-led project was aimed at giving Canadian young people a platform for sharing their opinions on how to contribute to the global agenda. By including the International Certificate students as spokespersons for this project we are able to ensure that the opinions of youth are heard, respected and taken seriously.  On behalf of SOS Children’s Villages and the thousands of children we represent – thank you and we look forward to Taking Action again with you in 2016!

In September 2015 Carleton University will be launching a new undergraduate degree, the Bachelor of Global and International Studies.  The OSDSB International Certificate Program aligns very well with our new degree.  Both programs emphasize student engagement with the wider world through language learning, intercultural competence and experiential learning outside the classroom, combined with structured course work that has an international focus.  We hope and expect to welcome many graduates of the ICP program into our new degree.

Dr. Chris Brown, Program Director, Bachelor of Global & International Studies – Carleton University

My first year being in the ICP has been incredible so far! I have been given many opportunities to gain experience and knowledge plus I have gotten to meet a ton of new people. I cannot wait to continue being in this awesome learning program with the OCDSB.

The International Certificate Program has broadened my view at a global level and offered me a chance to experience new things that many high school students do not. For example, my one-month exchange to Japan allowed me to understand and experience the cultures and values of a country that is so different than Canada's. I've matured greatly after I returned from my trip, and learned many valuable lessons along the way. The ICP program has offered me a life changing experience and provided me opportunities for the future, and with that, I'm forever thankful.

The ICP program gives me a feel of the world outside of my community and lets me be more involved with different cultures. As days pass and we become more internationalized, youth should be more aware of situations happening in our world and learn more about them to make a positive change.

If it wasn't for the ICP program I would never thought of going on exchange to Italy or applying for the ICP China Pilot Project. The ICP has allowed me to not only learn about different cultures but also experience those cultures first hand.
