The naming of a school is community-lead and governed by policy and procedure. The proposed name - Vimy Ridge Public School received overwhelming community, student, parent, and staff support.

The rationale for choosing the school’s name was it represented a major battle involving Canadians with great historical significance; the military connection to Elizabeth Park Public School; 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the battle of Vimy Ridge and; the 150th anniversary of Canada coincides with the school opening.

The two-storey facility opened its doors to close to 600 students in September 2017 featuring a maker space that will focus on science, engineering, technology and math. It also has a green roof, and an outdoor classroom. The school has the capacity to welcome 600 to 800 students.

Vimy Ridge has three language streams, including 50-50 French and English split, an English-only stream and early French immersion for Grade 1 to 8 students.

The school will also have three specialized classes, including two for junior and intermediate students with learning challenges and one intermediate class for those with behaviour exceptionalities.
