OCDSB Students and Staff Host Remembrance Day Ceremonies Friday, November 10, 2017

November 9, 2017 – Ottawa – From  A.Y Jackson Secondary School to Westwind Public School, Ottawa-Carleton District School Board students and staff will come together on Friday, November 10, 2017 to commemorate Remembrance Day.

Ceremonies will include assemblies, choir and glee club presentations, reading of poems and dramatic productions. Students have spent many weeks researching the importance of honouring the date and time when armies stopped fighting in World War I - November 11th at 11am in 1918. Some 100,000 Canadian soldiers died in the First and Second World Wars.

Sir Robert Borden High School students will focus on “1917: I Remember." Twenty thousand, two-hundred and forty Canadian soldiers’ names were printed in recognition of those who died 100 years ago. The ledger sheets are posted all around the school. In addition, a Vimy Ridge monument covered with poppies will be on display in front of the school.

Sir Robert Borden will have 2 assemblies:

Grades 7, 8, & 9: 9:05 a.m. - 9:35 

Grades 10, 11, & 12: 9:45 a.m.-10:15 a.m. 

Colonel By Secondary School will have two drama performances, a number of musical pieces including a student performance of The Last Post and a soloist performance of O Canada. Brigadier-General Steven Moritsugu will be the guest speaker.

Colonel By Secondary School will host 2 assemblies:

Assembly #1:10:25 a.m.

Assembly #2:11:25 a.m.

Blossom Park Public School will have their youngest and oldest students hold a wreath laying ceremony. In addition, there will be a performance by the glee club; student presentations; and a play highlighting the importance of remembering the sacrifices of soldiers and their families. The ceremony will be held from 9:10 a.m. -10:20 a.m.

York Street Public School students will welcome a guest speaker from the Memory Project. There will be choir performances, a concert violinist, a bugler, poetry recitals, and the laying of classroom wreaths. The ceremony will take place from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
