Freedom of Information Requests

Before making a formal request for information
Many records are available without making a formal FOI request under MFIPPA. Our website has links to many key documents including agendas, minutes, policies, procedures and memos to trustees.  If you can't find what you are looking for on our website, email us at communications@ocdsb.ca.

If you are  looking for specific information or to access records, you may contact the OCDSB Freedom of Information Coordinator to determine if a formal request for information should be submitted.

The Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA)  provides a process for the public to access specific information from the OCDSB. You can follow this simple two-step process:

How to make an freedom of information (FOI) request
Step 1: Complete a MFIPPA Request Form stating that you are requesting information or asking for your personal information under MFIPPA. Request forms are also available from most government organizations across Ontario, or you may use the generic form provided by the IPC.

Step 2: Forward the completed request form to the OCDSB Freedom of Information Coordinator. A $5.00 application fee must accompany your request for access to information. Make your cheque payable to the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board.

Submit your FOI request to:

Michele Giroux
Freedom of Information Coordinator
Ottawa-Carleton District School Board
133 Greenbank Road
Nepean, ON

Email: michele.giroux@ocdsb.ca

Timeline for receiving the requested information
Under the Act, the OCDSB has 30 days to respond to information requests. On occasion, the Freedom of Information Coordinator may ask for an extension if the request is for an extensive number of records. Extra time may also be needed if an outside third party needs to be contacted, of if the request is received during the summer months when certain school staff may not be accessible.

Associated fees for requested documents
There are fees associated with making a request for information under MFIPPA. When documents are requested, $7.50 is charged for every 15 minutes of search time, computer data retrieval, and document preparation. Document copies are charged at the rate of .20 cents per page. Postage or shipping charges may also apply. Fees are not charged for the time required to locate and prepare records for personal information requests.

How to file an appeal relating to the access of information
Individuals have the right to appeal any decision made by the OCDSB relating to the access of records or personal information.

Appeals are filed with the Information and Privacy Commissioner (IPC) of Ontario,  who is independent of the government or any institution.
